At the grand expense of £10, I picked up a used Holga 120 GN from Vinted, thinking it was a nice, cheap way for me to try out some Medium Format photography. I had seen plenty of videos on YouTube citing it as 'favourite camera' or 'great introduction to shooting 120', so I was quite looking forward to it arriving. I was aware that a lot of models had rather severe light leak issues due to its all-plastic construction; however, I wasn't too phased, more intrigued to see what results it would produce. There was a nice little park not far from where I live, so I decided that would be a good place for me to go and shoot a test roll. I loaded it up with a roll of Ilford HP5 and braved the cold and, quite frankly, miserable weather.
The Holga is definitely one of the worst cameras I've ever used technically. It's such a simple piece of kit, but looking at these images, they kind of work. The out-of-focus, shaky look as well as the light leaks all contribute to a rather haunting aesthetic, which I do rather happen to like. Where the images are sharp, it holds up quite well, and I do really like the focus fall-off. I doubt I will get much use out of this little camera; however, if I ever get to work on stills for a horror film again, I would LOVE to shoot some images with this. I think it would lend itself to the genre really well.
